At Markuson Construction Inc., we had the privilege of working on a comprehensive masonry restoration project for Spiral Communications in Nebraska City, Nebraska. This historic building required expert care to preserve its architectural integrity while restoring its visual appeal. Our team focused on tuck-pointing the entire structure, inside and out, ensuring both its structural stability and aesthetic value.
The restoration began with a thorough acid wash of the exterior to eliminate decades of dirt and pollutants, revealing the natural beauty of the brickwork beneath. Once cleaned, our skilled craftsmen proceeded with tuck-pointing the mortar joints, removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with high-quality, durable materials to reinforce the structure’s longevity.
The front storefront of the building had endured significant wear and tear. To restore its original charm, we rebuilt the lower portion using new brickwork that matched the building's historical design. We added stone quoins on either side of the storefront to give it a sophisticated, decorative finish and enhance its curb appeal.
Throughout the project, we employed scaffolding and aerial lifts to ensure safety and efficiency while working at heights. Our attention to detail and commitment to preserving the building’s historical features were key to the project’s success.

Historic Preservation of the Reverend George B. Hitchcock House: Limestone Foundation Restoration, Stone Carving, & Tuck-Pointing in Lewis, Iowa
At Markuson Construction Inc., we take pride in our work on historically significant properties. One of our standout projects was the historic preservation of the Reverend George B. Hitchcock House, located just outside Lewis, Iowa. This important property, once a key stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War, is now a National Historic Landmark that preserves its critical role in American history.
As part of the masonry restoration work, our team focused on restoring the home’s deteriorating limestone foundation. Using locally sourced limestone from nearby quarries, we carefully rebuilt the foundation wall, maintaining the property’s historical integrity. We paid special attention to preserving the original materials and craftsmanship of the structure.
Our team first excavated the failing foundation and removed the damaged stone. We then split larger pieces of limestone into smaller sections for easier handling and to replicate the original design. The new foundation wall was built with these stones, ensuring structural stability and historical accuracy. Additionally, we installed I-beams to provide the necessary support to the home’s stone walls during the rebuild.
In addition to the foundation restoration, we carved a new stone entry door to match the original design. Our team also performed tuck-pointing around all the stonework to ensure a seamless finish. This final step guaranteed a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing result, enhancing the historical beauty of the home.
This project showcases our expertise in stone masonry, historic foundation repairs, and the preservation of historic homes. If you need stone carving, foundation restoration, or tuck-pointing services for your historic property, our team is ready to help. Historic Preservation of the Burke-Woodard House, Built in 1897: Stonework Restoration and Custom Quartzite Installations
The Burke-Woodard House, a historical gem built in 1897, stands as a testament to the area's rich history. Originally owned by prominent figures—Mr. Burke, a well-known attorney, and Mr. Woodard, a successful candy business owner—the home reflects its owners’ legacy and the cultural significance of the era.
In this historic preservation project, our team was honored to restore and enhance the property’s stonework, maintaining its historical authenticity while improving its curb appeal. Our work began with the excavation of a deteriorating concrete retaining wall, which we replaced with a custom-built quartzite stone wall. Sourced from salvaged stone from demolished homes, the quartzite not only mirrored the original design but also added lasting durability to the structure.
To enhance the property’s entry, we designed and installed custom quartzite step slabs, ensuring a seamless integration with the original design of the home. The finishing touch was adding beaded joints to the stonework, creating a refined and polished look that complements the historical character of the Burke-Woodard House.

Custom Brickwork & Stonework in Historic Dundee Neighborhood, Omaha, NE | Brick Fence, Patio & Driveway Installation
We had the pleasure of working on an extraordinary custom brickwork and stonework project in the historic Dundee neighborhood, located off of Happy Hollow Blvd in Omaha, Nebraska. This project involved crafting stunning new features for the property, including a custom brick fence, a brick paver-bordered concrete driveway, and a beautiful circular patio.
New Brick Fence and Columns with Hand-Carved Stone Inlays
Our work began with the removal of the old fencing, making way for a new brick fence around the property. We started by installing concrete footings along the perimeter of the property, ensuring a solid foundation for the brick fence and brick columns. The columns were designed with custom hand-carved stone inlays and stone caps, adding a unique and elegant touch to the entryway. Additionally, we crafted custom quoins, featuring the letter "K" carved into the stone, to make the property stand out.
Once the brickwork was completed, our team finished by washing down the entire structure, highlighting the clean, precise craftsmanship.
Brick Paver-Bordered Concrete Driveway with Decorative Inlays
Next, we focused on replacing the driveway with a stylish half-moon design featuring two entrances. This brick paver-bordered concrete driveway incorporated brick paver ribbon inlays along the edges, offering a sophisticated look and ensuring long-term durability. The brick paver border added a personalized touch while maintaining the functionality of the concrete base, enhancing the property's entrance in both form and function.
Sidewalks with Brick Paver Borders and Ribbons
We also replaced and added new sidewalks, using brick paver ribbons and brick paver sides to give the walkways a refined, cohesive look. These sidewalks perfectly complemented the rest of the custom brickwork around the property, tying together the overall design.
Circular Patio with Cobblestone Retaining Wall
The final element of this project was a circular patio at the front of the property, bordered by a cobblestone retaining wall topped with a flagstone cap. This patio provided an ideal space for outdoor enjoyment. As with the sidewalks and driveway, the patio was accented with brick paver ribbons and brick paver borders, bringing a polished, consistent style to the entire property.
This custom brick and stone project significantly enhanced the property’s curb appeal, adding both beauty and value to the home.
